Despite earlier reports, Rupert Wyatt appears to be the frontrunner to direct Star Trek 3, not Jon M. Chu. This news come to us via Collider, who are reporting that the rumors that surfaced a few hours ago appear to be just that, rumors.
What leads them to believe this is a couple of things. One, Chu has G.I. Joe 3 on his plate, which would make it tough to helm Star Trek 3Â as well. More importantly, however, is that Chu’s reps deny any involvement with the project, stating that the director hasn’t even been contacted yet. Finally, Collider editor-in-chief is hearing from his sources that Rupert Wyatt is in fact up for the job.
Now, this could just be yet another rumor that proves to be untrue, but Cinematallica is also reporting the same thing, that sources are pointing to Wyatt being “virtually a lock” for the gig.
Of course, nothing at all has been confirmed by the studio just yet so all we can do is speculate. Taking into consideration everything we know though, Wyatt seems most likely for the job and personally, I think he’d be the better choice. I’m not a fan of Chu at all and though I didn’t love what Wyatt did with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (I thought it was very overrated), I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the director’s chair for Star Trek 3.
With everything starting to leak out now, I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before Paramount gives us an official answer. When they do, we’ll be sure to let you know.
What do you make of all this? Who would you rather see direct Star Trek 3, Jon M. Chu, Rupert Wyatt or someone else? Let us know in the comments below.
