Russell Crowe is currently in negotiations to portray the title character in the upcoming Biblical epic film Noah. The movie, which will be directed by Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky, will follow Noah, a man who loves Earth and all of its animal inhabitants until he becomes disillusioned with the way humans are treating their planet.

First Showing is reporting that negotiations come after Aronofsky expressed interest in having Crowe lead the picture. Furthermore, the actor hinted on his Twitter page that he was interested in appearing in the film, which will be backed by Paramount and New Regency and will reportedly begin shooting in July.

Aronofsky and his Protozoa Pictures partner Scott Franklin will produce Noah with Mary Parent and the script comes from Aronofsky along with Ari Handel. John Logan is credited with working on a re-write.

While Crowe and Aronofsky have both tackled serious, dramatic films in the past, Noah will be a completely different project for both of them. It’s an incredibly ambitious project and it will be interesting to see how the two tackle the religious story, and how receptive their fans will be of them taking on such a sensitive subject.
