Fans are obviously over the moon that we’ll soon have Scarlet Johansson starring in her very own outing as Natasha Romanoff, but it’s also got the filmmakers over at Marvel HQ excited as well. Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo spoke about Black Widow on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and expressed their interest in the project while also touching base on the areas of Natasha’s character that it could explore.

Here’s what Joe Russo had to say:

“Yeah, we’re very happy for that. I mean it’s such a rich and interesting character. There’s so much to explore with a character whose history was as a villain, and you know, Scarlett does such a good job of playing that character and people are so used to that character that you forget the character’s history, and so there’s a lot of compelling stories to tell about someone who has a dark past.”

A Black Widow movie has been a long time coming. Johansson first debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and since then, she’s become a founding member of The Avengers and has gone on to star in Captain America: The Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, with two more appearances in Infinity War and Avengers 4 coming up.

As Russo says, the most interesting road for Black Widow to go down is to explore Natasha’s dark past. Either taking the form of a prequel or featuring some ghosts from her days as a Russian assassin coming back to haunt her. Whatever it offers, reports say that Black Widow could be with us as soon as 2020. If that’s true, expect some concrete info on the project to surface sooner rather than later.
