Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and subsequent restart of the Star Wars movie universe has allowed for a few fans who’ve grown up now to enter the film industry and realize their dreams of helming a feature set in that galaxy far, far away. So far, J. J. Abrams (The Force Awakens), Gareth Evans (Rogue One), Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi) and others have been lucky enough to nab the job of a lifetime. But who might be next?
Well, if they have it their way, it might just be the Russo brothers, as they recently mentioned that they’d love to direct a Star Wars film. The pair are most well known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with two phenomenally popular movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, already under their belt. Not to mention the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
Here’s what Joe Russo said to Variety on the subject when asked about Star Wars:
“I sat in a theater when I was 11 years old and watched The Empire Strikes Back from 10 in the morning until 10 at night the day it came out. To say we’re obsessed with Star Wars is an understatement. We’d absolutely love to do a Star Wars film.”
We assume that after Kathleen Kennedy and the other head honchos at Lucasfilm hear this, they’ll phone up the Russos straight away, as the pair seem like such obvious candidates to helm a Star Wars movie. Not only are they capable directors with a clear passion for the franchise, but they also have quite a rare skill on their resume: they’ve helmed movies that are equally as big as Star Wars.
Furthermore, they already have an in with Disney, as the studio owns both Marvel and Lucasfilm. As such, it shouldn’t be too difficult to make this happen, right?
That said, it’s not like the Russos’ calendars are empty. The pair are currently getting to work on Avengers 4, which they’ll shoot until December. After that, however – and after a well-earned rest, no doubt – they might be free to move onto the Star Wars franchise.
