Two months ago, Squirrel Girl was widely considered to be one of, if not the most obscure superheroes in the Marvel catalog – that was, until Pitch Perfect stalwart Anna Kendrick threw her support behind the cutesy character, claiming that she’d be down for the part.
She wasn’t alone in thinking that, either, with the illustrious Edgar Wright also vouching for Kendrick to nab the role, despite the fact that there’s currently no Squirrel Girl movie in production.
Does Kendrick have enough clout to spearhead a feature film based purely on fan support? Who knows. But in the intervening weeks, the actress has found two new supporters in Joe and Anthony Russo, who know a thing or two about the superhero space after helming Captain America: Civil War.
Speaking to Yahoo, the directing siblings stated: “It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans.” Endorsements don’t come much more encouraging than that, but the real question now is, will Hollywood studios stand up and take notice?
As a Squirrel Girl movie continues to scurry around the rumor mill, the Russo brothers also solicited questions about 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, revealing that they currently have their “hands full trying to tell the story we have with our preexisting characters.” That makes it tricky to shoehorn in additional characters in the vein of, say, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. When pressed about Carol Danvers, Anthony Russo remain tight-lipped.
“If they ever cast that role, maybe,” Anthony replied, clearly joking. “Do you know if they’ve cast it yet? That’s one we’re going to have to plead the fifth on.”
