The Russos Just Dropped A Big Hint About Avengers 4’s Storyline

Now that we've seen Avengers: Infinity War, the long wait begins to find out how everything resolves in next May's Avengers 4. We've definitely got enough to think about over that time, too, as the ending of Infinity War blows the whole MCU wide open, making it difficult to work out what will happen next.

Now that we’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, the long wait begins to find out how everything resolves in next May’s Avengers 4. We’ve definitely got enough to think about over that time, too, as the ending of Infinity War blows the whole MCU wide open, making it difficult to work out what will happen next.

Thankfully, then, some juicy rumors have given us a rough idea of where things might be headed. The big one is that time travel will be involved, with the heroes revisiting moments from their past. For instance, set photos have shown a grey-haired Tony Stark and Ant-Man interacting with Captain America in his brighter costume from The Avengers.

There hasn’t been an official confirmation of this just yet, mind you, but some new comments from the Russo brothers have given us further evidence that this theory is at least on the right track. While talking to ComicBook.com, Joe Russo explained that Avengers 4 would not rely on any comic book arcs for inspiration and will be “fresh territory.” Perhaps tellingly, he hinted that it would revisit prior Marvel movies through “a different lens.”

“I don’t think there are any comics that correlate to it,” Joe Russo said. “I think we’re in pretty fresh territory with Avengers 4. If anything, I think it’s interesting after to go back and look at some of the Marvel films and view them through a different lens. But I can’t think of any comics in particular that would have value.”

Since Infinity War‘s release, this particular theory has been bolstered by some rumored plot details which state that Avengers 4 will jump forward in time and open five years after Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe. This would explain Tony’s aged look, too.

The Russos have also teased that the BARF tech from Captain America: Civil War could prove key to how time travel is achieved in the film. No doubt more info about how this all fits together will materialize over the next 12 months, but until then, feel free to speculate in the comments section down below.
