Ryan Reynolds inadvertently casts doubt on a ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ sequel

A follow-up to the beloved film is looking unlikely.

Sorry, fans of the recent Dungeons & Dragons movie, I have some bad news for you. That little glimmer of hope for a sequel has diminished somewhat as Ryan Reynolds’ new movie all but confirms we won’t be seeing a follow-up to the critical hit anytime soon.

According to Deadline we have the Deadpool star to blame for our lack of a sequel — or rather, him and actor/director Kenneth Branagh. The pair are reportedly starring alongside one another in Mayday, an upcoming Apple TV Plus Original film.

Whilst not much is known about the upcoming title it was pitched to Skydance (who have been working closely with Apple lately) by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who previously directed and wrote the screenplay for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Unfortunately, the pair’s new project may prevent them from working on a sequel to the tabletop game adaptation. For fans of the movie this is pretty devastating news considering it was already looking dicey as to whether we’d be getting a sequel in the first place. Whilst those who saw it found it to be a surprisingly fresh and fun-packed ride, the fact is, it just didn’t pull the numbers Paramount was likely hoping for.

With a budget of $150 million, a studio would want to see a big return in profits but sadly it barely crossed the $200 million mark. The poor performance pretty much already sealed the movie’s fate, but now that we know the writers/directors have moved onto a different project with Mr. Reynolds, it feels like all hope is practically lost.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is available for digital download on services such as Amazon Prime Video, so if you’re intrigued but have yet to watch it now is the best time to do so. Maybe if it does well via streaming there could be a chance to rescue the seemingly doomed franchise.
