While the necessity of another Saw movie is debatable, Lionsgate are forging ahead with the next instalment which is set to be released seven years after Saw 3D (also known as Saw: The Final Chapter) wound up in theaters. That’s a huge gap, but the studio has indeed confirmed today that Saw: Legacy will reach the big screen on October 27th, 2017.

The franchise kicked off back in 2004 with then relative unknown James Wan at the helm. He’s since gone on to take charge of the likes of The Conjuring, Furious 7, and upcoming DC Comics adaptation Aquaman. The movie was a great launching platform for him, though the same sadly can’t be said for the filmmakers who followed, as they delivered disappointing sequel after disappointing sequel. Despite that, the Saw movies always found success at the box office, hence why Lionsgate is hoping to resurrect the series with Saw: Legacy.

Plot details are being kept a closely guarded secret at this stage, though we do know that Michael and Peter Spierig will be directing.

With any luck, Saw: Legacy will take a back to basics approach after the elaborate sequels, which may have found success in terms of gore, but fell flat thanks to their often unnecessarily convoluted and far-fetched stories. We’ll just have to wait and see how this one turns out, but it’s fair to say that we now know what many moviegoers will spend next Halloween doing.
