Video game fans were left disappointed a little earlier this year by Warcraft, the movie many hoped would turn around the genre’s fortunes after flops like Doom and Agent 47.

Unfortunately, that received a tepid response both critically and financially, so it’s now up to Assassin’s Creed to be the first truly great video game adaptation. Should it succeed, don’t be surprised to see Ubisoft finally move forward with the likes of Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens on that front, but today, they’ve released two brand new official images depicting the two very different characters Michael Fassbender will be playing.

Assassin’s Creed is set to focus on Callum Lynch (Fassbender) after he discovers that he’s a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day, and we get a taste of both of those worlds in the gallery above. The movie will be set in the same world as the game, but just how closely tied to them it will be remains to be seen.

Assassin’s Creed also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Ariane Labed, and is currently set to be released on December 21st, 2016.
