A third Sherlock Holmes film starring Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic detective and Jude Law as his loyal sidekick Dr. Watson has been in the works for what feels like forever now, but at long last, the original dynamic duo are ready to join forces again and bring us another action-packed adventure.
With the pic beginning to come together now, some recent intel told us that Sherlock Holmes 3 will see Holmes and Watson travel to the Old West. And with production gearing up to begin in January, the project has finally found a director. Deadline’s reporting today that Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman helmer Dexter Fletcher has boarded the movie and will oversee the detective’s next big screen outing.
Given how successful those two aforementioned films were, Fletcher’s involvement is certainly a good sign, even if we were hoping for Guy Ritchie to return after directing Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, A Game of Shadows. But change isn’t always a bad thing and we definitely welcome Fletcher and the unique vision he’ll surely bring along with him.
Beyond Law and Downey Jr., it’s unclear who else might star in the threequel, but you can bet that the studio will be hoping to rope in some more A-list stars. Who knows, if we’re lucky, we may even get to see a few more MCU actors join RDJ and Law?
While Sherlock Holmes 3‘s December 22nd, 2021 release date may seem like a long time away, the fact that a director is now locked in is definitely a good sign and likely means that we can expect some casting news and hopefully a bit of insight into the plot sooner rather than later. As always, watch this space for more.
