Courting controversy at every turn is Shia LaBeouf, an actor who has recently totally changed his career path. Currently starring in Lawless, the actor’s next project will be the Lars von Trier film Nymphomaniac, which will take on the form of an erotic drama.

Not too long ago, LaBeouf announced that he’d be partaking in real sex for the film and now, he’s opened up to TV host Chelsea Handler and revealed that he actually sent a sex tape of himself and girlfriend Karolyn Pho to von Trier, in hopes of earning the role.

When asked how he got the part in the film, LaBeouf answered:

“I sent him videotapes of me and my girlfriend having sex and that’s how I got the job.”

Of course, he could just be kidding but with the recent direction that his career is heading in, I think it’s safe to take him seriously.

Following “a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe,” the film is sure to turn some heads. But then again, when does a von Trier film ever fly under the radar?

I enjoy Shia LaBeouf as an actor, quite a bit actually, but I do think that he’s headed down a rather strange path. It will be interesting to see not only how Nymphomaniac turns out, but what effect it has on the actor’s career.

It’s a risky move joining a film like this, that’s for sure, especially for an actor who is most well known for starring in a very successful blockbuster trilogy. LaBeouf certainly had a whole plateful of films to choose from for his next project and at the very least, I suppose we should respect him for the brave and fearless decision to join a von Trier film.

What do you think? Is Shia LaBeouf headed down a dangerous path? Is the actor taking the whole “changing his image” thing too far?
