As things stand, Avatar 2 is currently penciled in for release on December 21, 2018, almost a decade after James Cameron’s original broke nearly every box office record in sight in its journey to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all-time – a title it still holds to this day.
But if Cameron’s 2009 feature proved a runaway success, its sequel(s) has struggled to set the wheels in motion, leaving many to wonder whether the Avatar franchise has long missed its window. Regardless, much of that extended production can be traced back to the director’s bold vision for the future, one which reportedly involves a family saga told across not one, or two, but four sequels.
It’s a story that grew immensely in the telling, then, but those holding out hope for Avatar 2 to make its debut in two years’ time may soon be disappointed, as Sigourney Weaver has questioned whether the late 2018 release date is even realistic considering that filming is still to commence. Here’s what the actress and all-round sci-fi stalwart told The Hollywood Reporter: “We haven’t started it, so I don’t know how realistic that date is, but I think it’s going to be very exciting.”
For such an effects-heavy blockbuster, news that Avatar 2 remains on the shelf doesn’t exactly bode well for its chances of hitting that aforementioned 2018 date. Will Fox opt to postpone the release once again? It certainly wouldn’t be for the first time, and though there’s currently no official statement from the studio, the general consensus seems to be that James Cameron will jump-start the Avatar franchise when it’s fit and ready. The scripts in place are “amazing,” at least.
Avatar 2 remains booked in for December 21, 2018 at the time of writing. Tell us though, are you hopeful that Cameron and Co. can whip together the sequel in time?
