Silver & Black Will Now Be Split Into Two Standalone Movies

Badass as Venom may look, it's become apparent to all that Sony is just throwing whatever they can at the wall and seeing what'll stick. I mean, do we really need solo movies for the likes of Morbius and Kraven the Hunter before they've been established in prior flicks? Yes, comic book readers may know who they are, but the the average moviegoer probably doesn't - nor do they have any reason to pay for a ticket.

On that note, now seems like the opportune time to discuss the rocky road endured by Silver & Black. Having been a hot topic of discussion back in 2017 (okay, maybe lukewarm), it was originally set to introduce Silver Sable and Black Cat to the big screen via a team-up picture of their own. But after news saying the project had been stuck in development begun spreading, many of us were more than ready to write it off.

Well, today is the day you can throw away any notion of that movie coming to fruition because the studio is now opting to give Black Cat and Silver Sable their own separate live action adventures. In fact, Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, was able to offer some reasoning behind this move while speaking with Variety, saying:

“We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.”

Right as they may be in that regard – and there’s the fact that I’d pay to see Black Cat by her lonesome – the point made earlier about how general audiences have no reason to invest their time and money remains valid. Without Spider-Man appearing alongside Felicia Hardy, people may see her for what she is: a Catwoman knockoff.

Keep in mind that while Variety points out that though no official decision has been made to detach former Silver & Black director Gina Prince-Bythewood from either project, she’s unlikely to helm them. Still, she’s expected to produce both, so keep watching this space as more develops.
