Today we get our first look at Simon Pegg, complete with a moustache, in the upcoming Australian film Kill Me Three Times. Directed by Kriv Stenders (Red Dog) and written by first time screenwriter Kevin McFarlan, the cast for this one features a nice mix of old and new faces such as Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Sullivan Stapleton (the upcoming 300: Rise of an Empire), Bryan Brown (F/X), Alice Braga (Elysium), Callan Mulvey (Zero Dark Thirty) and Luke Hemsworth (brother of Chris & Liam).
Billed as a Rashomon-esque tale, the story follows an assassin (Pegg) hired by a rich man (Mulvey) to kill his wife (Braga). Also involved are a gambling addict (Stapleton) caught in a life insurance scam with a local girl (Palmer), a corrupt cop (Brown), and a surfer (Hemsworth) trying to protect the Braga’s character from the assassin.
It sounds like a modern day spin on the Ozploitation films that pervaded the Australian cinema of the 70s and early 80s, and the Rashomon angle, (telling the same story from three different perspectives), seems like an interesting way to frame the film.
Pegg’s character is going to be the link between the three stories, and I like the overall look that he’s sporting for Kill Me Three Times. In recent years, he has proven to be a savvy enough actor to subvert your expectations of what he can and can’t do, so I’m really looking forward to seeing him take on a role that’s a little more gritty and something that we’re not used to seeing him in.
What do you think? Does Kill Me Three Times sound like the perfect next step for Pegg, or do you prefer to see him stick with comedic characters? Let us know in the comments section below.
