Those who feel that J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films strayed a bit too far in tone and spirit from the original series (and subsequent movies and TV shows), rejoice, because Simon Pegg has your back! While doing the press rounds for his upcoming film Kill Me Three Times, Pegg spoke a bit about how he and co-screenwriter Doug Jung are approaching the script for Star Trek 3, and promises that change is coming.
Pegg revealed that he and Jung are hoping to return Trek to its TV roots, which begins first and foremost with its inherent sense of optimistic adventure and discovery.
In an interview with Spinoff Online, Pegg said:
“We just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. And it’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before – where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation.”
Those are words that will likely make diehard Trek fans very happy; as successful as Abrams’ contemporary reboot has been, it’s been heavily criticized for essentially turning Star Trek into Star Wars, and thus doing away with some of the things that made the franchise so unique and special in the first place. Star Trek Into Darkness took those changes even further, and lost a bit of the goodwill that its far more successful and revered predecessor earned in the first place. Luckily, it seems that Pegg recognizes that, and is aiming to steer the Enterprise back on course.
