Though Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still a little over two weeks away from reaching cinemas, it seems that Sony already has plans for where to take things from here, with Deadline reporting that an animated Spider-Women project is on the way.

The film is said to focus on three generations of female characters with Spidey abilities, one of which looks likely to be Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Verse heroine Spider-Gwen. With a script penned by Bek Smith, the movie will be produced by Amy Pascal, with Avi Arad, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller all likely to be involved. And for those hoping to see a little more action from Miles Morales, the Spider-Verse lead is also said to be getting a separate sequel of his own.

Perhaps Sony is counting their chickens before they hatch, but if the pre-release buzz of this first release is anything to go by, then audiences will indeed be crying out for more from this animated multi-verse. The first reactions for Miles’ upcoming big screen debut made their way online earlier this month and suggested an overwhelmingly positive reception, with multiple social media users going as far as to call this flick one of the best superhero movies ever made. And while most of us have yet to see the film for ourselves, the fans have at least witnessed enough of Spider-Verse’s vibrant animation to suspect that the hype just might be real.

Though there’s some debate to be had over just how sustainable an interconnected superhero franchise you can make out of a collection of heroes who have more or less the same powers, here’s hoping that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has at least made its array of personalities endearing and diverse enough to justify these two parallel follow-ups. Either way, we’ll find out when the film hits theaters on December 14th.
