Back in December, Sony revealed their plan to make every Spider-Man fanboy’s dreams come true by confirming both a Venom and a Sinister Six spin-off, or basically the greatest ideas for villain-based comic movies ever. Now, only a few months later, it looks like plans are already moving forward, as the studio is nearing a deal with Drew Goddard to direct Sinister Six from his own script.
As if you needed a reason to get more excited for this movie, Goddard behind the camera should definitely do the trick. He isn’t the most experienced choice, but his feature debut The Cabin In The Woods is an excellent film that showed us he’s definitely capable of handling a big movie in a fun way. Between Sony signing him on as a writer for this expanded Spidey universe and the fact that he’s writing and directing the pilot of the new Daredevil series, it’s clear that there’s a lot of confidence in his knowledge of the Marvel world.
While it still hasn’t been confirmed which lineup this film will feature, the original Sinister Six was led by Doctor Octopus and included Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman and the Vulture. That group would make sense, especially considering Electro is the main villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and, despite Marc Webb’s denial, there are still some who believe Colm Feore is playing Adrian Toomes (aka the Vulture). Then again, I would have no problem if one of the characters was removed to make room for the Hobgoblin, which was the case in later comic arcs.
We still don’t have any indication of when this film might release, but it’s safe to assume it isn’t going to happen before The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2016. With everything Goddard has on his plate right now, it could be a little while before this one moves into production, but regardless of when it swings in, I can’t wait to see what the director/writer does with Sinister Six.
