To absolutely no one’s surprise Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has absolutely smashed it at the box-office in it’s opening weekend. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a phenomenal piece of animation, with one of the most beautifully animated scenes in all of cinematic animation history as well as a heartfelt story, well-developed characters, and great action sequences. It is no wonder, then, that people have come out in droves to see the sequel with the film now boasting one of the biggest box-office openings so far this year.

The film finally swung into theatres on June 2 and has since made a whopping $120.5 million in North America, well above early expectations. It also now holds the title of the third-best opening for any animated film ever and is the best ever for Sony Animation (not adjusted for inflation). The film also opened overseas to $88.1 million in 57 markets, bringing the global total to $208.6 million. There are still some countries still waiting for release such as in Japan, where fans have to wait until June 16 before heading to catch this movie.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also proves the trend of adults watching animated movies is only growing, with 67 percent of ticket buyers across North America being aged between 18 and 34. The sequel’s opening also gets to boast that it was three times bigger than its predecessor which, back in 2018, opened to $35.6 million domestically. Into the Spider-Verse eventually landed on accruing $384.2 million worldwide, but Across the Spider-Verse already looks set to easily overtake that.

With the film garnering strong reviews from both critics and audiences alike, it looks set to continue going strong for some time. Across the Spider-Verse proves that people are still down for superhero movies if the storytelling is original and engaging, something that Marvel has struggled with now for the last few years. This won’t be the last film in this franchise though, as a third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is also planned for 2024.

You can go add to these record-breaking figures by heading to theatres and buying a ticket to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse playing in theatres now.
