Scene 2: Captain America Teaches Patience

The second scene doesn’t offer anything in the way of setting up what’s to come, but it does feature a hilarious cameo from everyone’s favourite star-spangled Avenger.

Throughout the movie, Chris Evans pops up in character as Captain America in public service announcement videos that Peter’s high school is required to show the kids. Going by Steve Rogers’ outfit, they presumably hail from The Avengers era, before he went all rogue in the likes of The Winter Soldier and Civil War. Cap’s Fitness Challenge video, for instance, has been glimpsed in the trailers.

The best is saved until last, though. In a wonderfully fourth-wall breaking moment right at the end of the credits, Cap steps out in front of a white background in the style of one of his PSAs. This time around he decides to talk to us about patience, in a clear joke aimed at those of us who have sat through ten minutes of credits to see this scene.

“I’m Captain America, here to talk to you about one of the most valuable traits a solider or student can have: patience. Sometimes it leads to very little and it seems like it’s not worth it. And you wonder why you waited so long…” Steve then hesitates and starts talking to someone off-camera: “How many of these have I go to do?”

It’s a brilliant scene, like the kind you might expect to see in Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool instead of a Spider-Man film. Having said that, it definitely feels apiece with the rest of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which aimed to take a fresh, fun approach to the age-old story of the webslinger. Now that we’ve seen it, we can confirm that it totally succeeded in doing that, too.
