The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that the Spider-Man: Homecoming director has officially entered talks to helm the as-yet-untitled sequel. Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei are all expected to return for Homecoming 2, which currently has its crosshairs placed on July 5th, 2019.

If you’ve been keeping a close eye on the MCU slate, you’ll know that that date places Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 after both Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth, untitled Avengers movie, which won’t instigate the MCU reboot as initially thought. What we do know is that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wants to incorporate a previously unused villain into Peter Parker’s next solo outing – think Mysterio, Mister Negative and/or Scorpion – while there have also been rumblings that Homecoming 2 will usher in the next incarnation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Similar to how the original Homecoming, which has now grossed upwards of $468 million worldwide, dealt with the fallout of Civil War through the eyes of Peter Parker, Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is set to emerge from the ashes of Avengers 4 and that climactic battle with Thanos. Exactly how that one pans out remains to be seen, but all signs point to Marvel bumping off a number of prominent characters as its cinematic universe begins to make the transition to Phase 4.

Alas, Marvel fans needn’t worry about the fate of Tom Holland’s Web-Head, as the British up-and-comer wants to play Spidey for years to come, and is currently contracted to a full trilogy of Spider-Man solo movies. That means a Homecoming 3 is also on the cards, even if it won’t be with us until at least 2021.

THR’s report cautions that negotiations between Watts, Sony, and Marvel Studios are ongoing, but one would assume the filmmaker will jump at the chance to helm Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 after crafting a bona fide crowd-pleaser with the first. July 5th, 2019 is the date for your diaries.
