Tom Holland has already played Spider-Man in more movies than both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield due to the Avengers films. Despite having such a strong presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe though, the 22-year-old actor has only starred in one standalone Spidey movie to date.
That will, of course, change this summer with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home. It’s clear that Sony has a lot of faith in both the character and the young actor behind the mask, too, as they’re already reportedly planning for the web-slinger’s next installment to hit theaters in 2021.
According to Charles Murphy, the studio wants a Spider-Man film to be released every two years. If that’s the case, the ball needs to start rolling on the next effort almost immediately so they can begin shooting as soon as possible.
Garfield was never able to complete The Amazing Spider-Man trilogy, while Maguire retired from the role after three outings. History might therefore imply that a third movie could be the end of Holland’s portrayal as New York City’s wise-cracking vigilante. After all, Spider-Man is often seen as an adolescent, so as time goes on there may be talk of possibly replacing him with a younger talent.
On the other hand, the MCU is so vast that actors often stay in the same role for years on end, as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans can attest. There are so many storylines and villains in the Spider-Man canon that the films have yet to explore and by this logic, Holland may be poised to wear the suit for years to come.
Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if Sony really does decide to produce Spider-Man films every two years. A 2021 effort would presumably compete with DCU’s Batman and Suicide Squad films, as well as any other movies Marvel has planned. As of now though, the only confirmed upcoming release for the web-slinger is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which hits theaters on July 2nd.
