After striking a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and finally ushering the franchise into the $1 billion club, Deadline’s brought us the shocking news that Sony’s parted ways with Disney and is taking Peter Parker along with them.

According to the new report, the two studios were taking part in a financial stand-off, with the House of Mouse hoping to rake in half of the profits from any of Spidey’s future adventures. When Sony inevitably said no, they also removed Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige from producing the hero’s next two films in any capacity.

With that said, Peter Parker’s sudden removal from the MCU has ruffled a lot of feathers. And fans have been quick to post their disparaging reactions over Sony’s total ownership on social media.

While there’s obviously a fair amount of criticism directed towards Sony and their ability to handle the franchise – including one poll from Fandom that indicates 82% of over 23,000 voters think the company will fail – there are others who are more understanding and hopeful, saying that Disney was out of line in asking for a 45% increase in their share.

Whether or not this reaction will have a bearing on the future of Spider-Man has yet to be seen. But in either case, it’s been reported that unless “something dramatic happens” between the two companies to make amends, Peter better start packing up shop.

So, with all of this news out on the table, we’d like to get some of your thoughts. What do you think this break up between the House of Mouse and Sony means for the property? And how can Peter Parker make his way out of Marvel’s web now that he’s been wrapped around it so tight? Be sure to give us any thoughts you may have in the comments section below.
