This morning saw the second trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home drop online, and it turned out to be a hugely exciting one that has a lot of importance for the entire MCU going forward. For example, it appears to confirm that Marvel’s going to explore the multiverse, it dealt with the fallout of Iron Man’s death and even teased some big changes in Peter’s personal life.
What’s more, it also confirmed the superhero name of a character that hasn’t been said out loud in the MCU before. It’s so casually done you might’ve missed it, but it’s actually a pretty important moment.
If you’ll recall, in one clip, Peter Parker’s reluctant to give up his summer vacation to aid Nick Fury and Mysterio in defeating the Elementals attacking Europe. “There’s gotta be someone else you can use,” Spidey pleads. “What about Thor?” Fury responds that the God of Thunder is “off-world.” Peter then suggests “Captain Marvel.” But Maria Hill says she’s “unavailable.”
Though Carol Danvers has already starred in two movies, Brie Larson’s heroine has never been given her official mantle before now. Captain Marvel was more about her reclaiming her human identity than adopting a superhero one while the other heroes just referred to her as Carol or Danvers in Avengers: Endgame. Following the big battle against Thanos’ forces, though, there must’ve been some proper introductions between the Avengers, hence how Peter knows her name.
This presumably tells us that Carol will officially land her superhero title in Captain Marvel 2, which makes sense, as Kevin Feige has previously hinted that the sequel will also be set in the MCU’s past, filling in what Carol’s been up to for the past 20 years.
It looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home will be full of these little clues as to what’s coming in the future of the MCU, then – which isn’t a surprise, considering it’s officially the final film of Phase Three. As such, be sure to catch it in cinemas from July 2nd.
