Star Trek fans are, suffice it to say, a pretty rabid bunch. So it comes as no surprise that with Star Trek Into the Darkness, a sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot of the series, due out in May 17th of next year, they’re prepared to pounce on any and all news, no matter how tiny.

Abrams, it seems, knows this and took to Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show to mess with them a little. He has a clip from the film, he tells Conan, who proceeds to be as baffled and excited by that notion as I imagine many a Star Trek fan were when watching his interview.

The film had barely started filming, so how could there be footage polished enough to show to a worldwide audience so soon? Set pictures, even official ones, this early on aren’t unheard of, but an actual clip? Surely this was too good to be true.

Turns out it was, to some extent, but how so I’ll leave for you to find out by watching the video below. Whatever the case may be, this sneak peek at Star Trek Into Darkness is sure to set the internet all atwitter one way or another.
