Here’s Why Rey Returns To Her Force Awakens Hairstyle In Star Wars: Episode IX

Last Friday, director J.J. Abrams took to Twitter with a photo from the set of Star Wars: Episode IX, along with the announcement that filming has officially wrapped on the upcoming flick. And while the image doesn’t tell us a whole lot new about the final installment of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, one unusual detail that eagle-eyed fans have picked up on is that Daisy Ridley is wearing the same hairdo that Rey had in The Force Awakens, and according to a new report from Making Star Wars, there’s a very specific reason for that.

Sources of the site have allegedly said that Rey’s hair has gone back to its old style from the 2015 film in order to match with unused footage in which she shares the screen with Leia Organa. As you may be aware, Episode IX will include previously filmed scenes featuring the late Carrie Fisher, and it seems that at least some of this footage will show the star interacting with Rey, meaning that Ridley’s look has to be changed for the sake of continuity.

Though the report has yet to be confirmed, Making Star Wars has a better track record than most when it comes to insider intel, and regardless of the reasons for Rey’s Force Awakens hair making a comeback, it still seems like a nice little detail that adds a fitting degree of symmetry to the current trilogy.

Speaking of which, the desert setting of Abrams’ photo has also led some fans to predict that Star Wars: Episode IX is bringing us back to Rey’s home planet of Jakku, and while this thought remains speculation for the time being, we’ll at least get some clarification when the film hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
