Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just a few short months away, we still don't know that much about the state of affairs in the galaxy far, far away. Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just a few short months away, we still don’t know that much about the state of affairs in the galaxy far, far away. In the wake of the Death Star’s destruction and the Emperor’s fiery demise circa Return of the Jedi, the Empire has clearly been struck a crippling blow, but new information about where The Force Awakens will find the once-almighty government has just been revealed through an unexpected source.

Comic-Con will surely see a lot of Star Wars coverage, and it’s just been announced that merchandise from the new installment will first be on sale in San Diego next month. That includes a 6-inch Black Series First Order Stormtrooper, which will play a villainous role in The Force Awakens.

So, as expected, the Empire has descended into chaos in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi, but it appears that a new evil has emerged in the form of some evil organization known as the First Order. And from the sounds of the “ruthless brutality,” they aren’t much better than the corrupt government they’re primed to replace.

Intriguingly, the Resistance is still the name given to the good guys, so it doesn’t appear that the Jedi have succeeded in ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity (like the New Republic heavily featured in all the apparently non-canon books). They’re still the underdogs, at least for now…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18, 2015.
