Well, that certainly didn’t take long.
Building on that huge, record-setting debut, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is already within arm’s reach of the billion dollar mark. Thanks to a stellar weekend, the Lucasfilm sequel is now simmering at $793.3 million worldwide, and will likely pass that aforementioned milestone in no time at all.
The split currently stands at $397 million domestically and $396 million overseas, which is certainly impressive. Then again, The Force Awakens was already at $600 million in North America by this point in its theatrical run, thanks to its massive $247 million opening. With a 76% dip this weekend, The Last Jedi is now tracking a bit lower than Abrams’ franchise revival, but it’s still expected to rake in about $1.6 billion worldwide when all is said and done.
Domestically, analysts predict a finish in the $750-$800 million range, putting it in second place for highest grossing movies on this side of the pond, behind only, once again, The Force Awakens, which did $936.7 million in North America. Worldwide, meanwhile, a $1.6 billion finish would place Rian Johnson’s sequel in the top 5, which currently includes:
- Avatar – $2.79B
- Titanic – $2.19B
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.07B
- Jurassic World – $1.67B
- Marvel’s The Avengers – $1.51B
So, while it may not post the same numbers as its predecessor, things are still looking very, very good for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which has been putting a smile on the faces of most critics but is splitting the fandom right down the middle. That being said, no one can deny that it’s a gorgeous, very well made film and one that while no doubt bold in its storytelling decisions, is still another thrilling chapter in the Skywalker saga.
