With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arriving this Christmas to wrap up the Sequel Trilogy, SW fans have just half a year left to get all those Rey and Kylo Ren theories out of their system. Ever since the duo were introduced in The Force Awakens and then their dynamic deepened in The Last Jedi, folks have been fascinated by the link between the pair. Could it be a romantic connection – even though Daisy Ridley doesn’t think so? Or could there be some spiritual tether between them? Well, this pretty wild new theory suggests the latter.
Reddit user Brilee93 has put forward the idea that Rey and Kylo Ren might actually be two sides of the same person, the light and the dark halves of the whole personified. The theorist references several telling lines of dialogue or visual clues from TFA to support their argument, including Kylo telling Han he’s “being torn apart,” the ground splitting in half between them and Snoke’s description of how “darkness rises and the light to meet it.”
Furthermore, the Redditor points to a precedent to this concept coming from Greek mythology, in which Zeus is known to split men into two, condemning them to spend their lives searching for the other part of their soul to become whole. To make the idea work in Star Wars mythology, just switch Zeus for the unknowable wisdom and power of the Force.
Kudos to the theorist here, as they’ve definitely thought their idea through. It’s also certainly an interesting, more high-concept take on the old “they’re actually secret twins” theory. Not to mention that the Sequel Trilogy has always been bold in its reinvention of the rules of the Force and what it can do, so this may be as likely as any other Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker theory out there about the true nature of Rey and Ren’s connection.
