In 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson surprised just about everyone with Rey’s parentage as he revealed that they were, in fact, “nobody,” or as Kylo Ren put it, they were “filthy junk traders” who sold their daughter just so they could get some drinking money. But with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker due to hit theaters in December, director J.J. Abrams has already told us that he’ll revisit this plot thread and may even expand on the twist.
What exactly he’s got planned remains to be seen, of course, but an interesting new rumor has popped up which may reveal what the final chapter in the Skywalker saga will tell us about Rey’s parentage. According to a source that we’ve spoke to who’s got close ties to the production, The Rise of Skywalker could reveal Daisy Ridley’s heroine’s parents to be none other than Leia and Han.
It’s important to note that our source stresses that this is only a rumor for now and is far from confirmed. Instead, it’s just something that’s been floating around amongst insiders with a few people claiming it to be the case. In other words, it should be taken with a grain of salt, even if it is interesting to consider.
Regardless of whether or not this pans out, it’ll no doubt be fascinating to see what Abrams has planned for us and if he’ll be able to further flesh out the character’s roots without watering down the message that Johnson made loud and clear in The Last Jedi. If you ask us, we feel like making Leia and Han Rey’s parents would be a bit too predictable and also present further problems for her arc and conflict with some of the things we’ve seen from her so far, but we won’t get too into that for now as again, this is strictly a rumor.
In any case, we’ll know soon enough who Rey’s real parents are, as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will blast into theaters across the world on December 20th, bringing an end to the Skywalker Saga in the process.
