With crimson IMAX posters and electrifying TV spots already clogging up the pipes of social media, the Powers That Be have now peeled back the curtain on the latest (and fairly familiar) international trailer for The Last Jedi, which contains only a sliver of new footage.

Placing a particular emphasis on Rey and Kylo Ren, her sworn enemy, above you’ll see Daisy Ridley’s Force-user in the midst of her Jedi training, having made contact with the wayward Luke Skywalker at the tail-end of The Force Awakens. At the outset, Rey’s understanding of Luke is predetermined by tall tales – tales that champion Luke as leader of the Rebel Alliance, and the one responsible for overthrowing the Empire – but it seems Mark Hamill’s Jedi endured his own torment between the events of Jedi and The Force Awakens, which goes some ways to explaining why Luke has been reduced to a shell of his former self.

In short: the first exchange between Luke and Rey will be a tense, steely affair, so it’s hardly surprising to hear that the latter will be a little disillusioned by the time The Last Jedi opens: “I need someone to show me my place in all of this.”

On the other side of the coin, Kylo Ren will be gunning for revenge come December, given he was humiliated (and visibly wounded) by his clash with Rey on Starkiller Base two years ago’. So rest assured; Star Wars: The Last Jedi will feature at least one lightsaber duel (and then some!) when Rian Johnson’s long-anticipated sequel drops on December 15th.
