So much attention has been paid to the core pillars of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (see: Snoke, Rey, Luke and Kylo Ren) that it’s almost easy to forget that Rian Johnson’s forthcoming sequel is about to canonize two major new human characters: DJ and Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.
Brought to life by Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern, respectively, the two franchise newcomers are literally worlds apart. DJ, for instance, is best described as an “enigmatic figure” replete with a “lackadaisical attitude.” What we do know is that he’s an expert codebreaker, and will seemingly factor into Finn and Rose’s mission aboard Canto Bight.
Holdo, on the other hand, is a high-ranking member of the Resistance. And a well-dressed one at that. Seen here in political attire, Laura Dern’s pink-haired leader looks to be addressing a small pool of Resistance fighters, along with a never-before-seen BB unit.
First spotted by Star Wars News Net, this image comes to us by way of The Ellen Show, where Dern remembered her Star Wars experience and sharing a set with the late, great Carrie Fisher.
Exactly how Holdo fits into the bigger picture remains to be seen, but previous reports have hinted that neither Leia nor Poe Dameron are on good terms with Dern’s Resistance leader. That doesn’t exactly bode well for the oncoming fight against the First Order, though we understand Holdo will fire a blaster at some point in The Last Jedi.
She’s also one of the few LGBTQ characters in Star Wars canon, which is a progressive step in the right direction for a franchise of this size. Indeed, John Boyega recently entertained the notion of a romantic subplot blooming between his Finn and Poe Dameron, the best damn pilot in the galaxy.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will see a release on December 15th.
