Chalmun’s Cantina, also known as the Mos Eisley Cantina, is a cornerstone of Star Wars history, having first appeared in George Lucas’ A New Hope all those years ago. Fast forward 40 years and change and Lucasfilm’s sci-fi fable has spawned a bona fide media juggernaut spanning all media – books, comics, animated TV shows…you name it – and that legacy will continue through the release of The Last Jedi in two months’ time.

But before Lucasfilm rolls out the next chapter in the storied Skywalker saga, the Powers That Be recently offered up a blast from the past in the form of From a Certain Point of View, an anthology series comprised of 40 short stories, each documenting a sizeable event in Star Wars history from an alternate perspective. And so, after spotlighting Darth Vader and his silent subordinate, Boba Fett, ComicBook.com has unearthed new details on Mos Eisley Cantina and, more specifically, why it refuses to serve droids.

Penned by Chuck Wendig, the “We Don’t Serve Their Kind Here” short story is told through the eyes of Wuher, the no-nonsense bartender pulling pints for a wretched hive of scum and villainy. In it, we learn that Wuher’s family were cruelly murdered by droids, thus explaining his deep-seated hatred for sentient machines. As luck would have it, Wuher managed to survive the attack – no thanks to the Jedi, mind you – which goes some ways to explaining why he holds the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi in high regard.

In fact, Wendig’s anthology notes that Wuher helped keep Obi-Wan’s location a secret from the Galactic Empire, thereby allowing Alec Guinness’ wise old Jedi to form a master-apprentice bond with the young Luke Skywalker. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Expect Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise to continue with the launch of The Last Jedi on December 15th. And if it’s new footage you’re after, you’d be best tuning in to Monday Night Football around 7pm PST – you know, providing you have a good tolerance for spoilers.
