If you ever thought of The Colbert Report’s irreverent host Stephen Colbert as the last person on the planet who might turn up in a series of super-popular fantasy films, you might want to kindly reconsider your position.

According to a recent interview that Colbert did with Playboy magazine, the popular comic was invited to the set of upcoming movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by Middle-Earth visionary Peter Jackson and shown 25 minutes of exclusive footage. According to Colbert, he was also taken to a number of filming locations. The big question is, of course, what the heck was he doing there? When prompted on the likelihood of an on-screen appearance, Colbert merely smiled and said “could be,” which is both very annoying and very Colbert.

Although it’s certainly a possibility that Colbert will actually make a cameo, there’s a huge chance that he’s purposely conjuring up some hype for absolutely no reason other than to amuse himself and some friends. Actually, it’d probably be just to amuse himself – he’d find that funnier.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for its cinematic debut on December 14th, and will serve as a prequel to Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The film also stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen (who reprises his role as Gandalf).

What are your thoughts on this little rumor? Would you like to see Colbert make an appearance or, like us, do you think that this is probably the most bizarre thing you’ve heard all day?
