Will Ferrell stars as a cute, happy-go-lucky terrier named Reggie who loves nothing more than running in the sunshine, chasing butterflies — and more than anything — his owner Doug. But unfortunately, Doug (Will Forte, perfectly cast) is a drunken lout who is not particularly interested in dog ownership, to put it gently, and routinely attempts to abandon Reggie in a game of what the dog perceives to be “fetch and f*ck.”

In other words, Doug drives Reggie out to a field, throws a tennis ball as hard as he can, drives away, and then utters the swear when the dog finds his way home.

However, it’s only after dropping Reggie off all the way out into the city that the poor pup realizes, with some help from newly befriended strays (Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park), that Doug has, in fact, abandoned him for good. But just before the film can tug on audience heartstrings, Reggie has a realization.

“I’m going back to Doug’s. He needs to pay for what he did with the only thing he truly loves,” Reggie declares, in the trailer’s pivotal moment. “I’m gonna bite his d*ck off.”

And from there begins sort of an Incredible Journey-meets-John Wick inspired adventure that sees the quartet of dogs trying to get Reggie back to his home … so he can bite Doug’s d*ck off. Will the dogs succeed? Or will Doug have a change of heart and repent for his lapses in judgement? Perhaps all four dogs will find loving homes in the end?

In either case, you’re definitely gonna want to leave the kids home for this one.
