The Pacific Rim sequel now has a release date of February 23rd, 2018, and the cast is beginning to come together. Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ John Boyega has already boarded the movie in a lead role (as the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the first instalment), and now it looks like Scott Eastwood will be joining him.

The son of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood, Scott has been making quite a name for himself in recent years, and has huge movies like Suicide Squad and Fast 8 on the way. There’s no word on who the actor will play as of right now, but Deadline mentions that he will have a “key” role. More details will no doubt be revealed soon enough, especially as production begins at the end of the year.

Released in 2013, Pacific Rim divided critics right down the middle but earned an admirable $411 million worldwide (the vast majority of which came from overseas territories like China). Universal and Legendary are clearly hoping that they can turn the property into a viable franchise by giving this sequel the green light, and with the cast shaping up to be pretty great so far, we’re feeling confident that they’ll be able to produce a hit here.
