Terminator Genisys Is Neither A Reboot Or Sequel, According To Star Jai Courtney

When you take a step back from cinema’s calendar year for 2015, it becomes easy to spot the much-anticipated heavy hitters, with the likes of Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and of course, Star Wars: Episode VII cramming up the release window. But one movie that is beginning to draw attention — and not just for its atypical, wholly erroneous title — is Alan Taylor’s Terminator Genisys.

It’s a film that is posed to kickstart an all-new trilogy within the beloved cybernetic universe, and in an interview with The Huffington Post, Jai Courtney — who is set to reprise his role as Kyle Resse — touched upon how Genisys will fit into the by-now convoluted timeline.

“What I can say is that we start in a place we’re familiar with from the early films and then, you know, circumstances change. It somewhat shifts the course of events from that point. It’s not necessarily a sequel or a reboot. I don’t even know how you brand it correctly. We’re not remaking one of the early ‘Terminator’ movies. And it doesn’t necessarily carry on from the point where we left off.”

Neither sequel nor reboot, it appears as though Terminator Genisys is set to break out on its own so to speak. Of course, the non-sequel will witness the return of the series’ key players, with the likes of Sarah and John Connor — played by Emilia Clarke and Jason Clarke, respectively — confirmed to reappear.

Speaking of which, in a related interview with website The Arnold Fans, Courtney spoke briefly about Genisys’ sequel duo, stating that it would be strange to release a Terminator film without the Austrian Oak himself.

“Hard to imagine a Terminator film without Arnold. I guess we start filming – I think the plan is do the next 2 back to back in 2016.”

In terms of the 2015 release, Courtney stated that, while he would like to see an R-rated Terminator movie in an ideal world, the Australian actor confirmed that it’s much more likely to be a PG-13.

“I would love to see it be rated R, but I don’t think it will. I think in this day & age, it’s much more likely to be PG-13. There were no f-bombs. But there’ll be a healthy amount of movie violence.”

Terminator Genisys is due to release on July 1st, 2015. Will you be catching it in theatres? Sound off below!
