Every summer, a movie emerges from the pack to secure itself the status of the season’s biggest and most unexpected sleeper hit, and there won’t be any contenders that come anywhere close to Sound of Freedom.

The hot-button thriller rooted in the unseemly world of human trafficking was filmed way back in the summer of 2018 and had a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox lined up, only for Disney to kick the Jim Caviezel star vehicle to the curb when the Mouse House acquired one of its oldest and fiercest competitors.

Fast forward half a decade – with Angel Studios now behind the project – and Sound of Freedom is in with a very real shot at earning more from the domestic box office than $200 million multiversal comic book extravaganza The Flash, which is every bit as ridiculous as it sounds. Thankfully, though, Ezra Miller’s disastrous flop is about to hit the blockchain, so there’s that.

Heading into the weekend, The Flash had barely squeaked past $100 million in ticket sales on home soil, while Sound of Freedom is aiming to cross the $70 million threshold by the end of Sunday. If it carries on at its current trajectory – and there’s every indication that it will seeing as earnings have been steadily increasing since it first hit theaters – then the Scarlet Speedster’s cursed debut could be easily outstripped by a controversial religiously-leaning title that cost $184 million less to produce, not that anyone is surprised by misery being piled on top of the DCU’s greatest-ever failure at this point.
