In more ways than one, there’s an awful lot riding on The Flash when it comes to theaters in less than two weeks.
The DCU’s impending overhaul at the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran has largely made it a canonically redundant exercise – or so we’ve been led to believe – and everyone knows how being deemed as irrelevant in the grand scheme of things worked out in the long run for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Then there’s the comic book adaptation’s rare status as a big budget blockbuster that won’t be promoted by its leading star, which was admittedly to be expected given Ezra Miller’s high-profile legal troubles and desire to stay out of the limelight after seizing so many headlines for all the wrong reasons.
In an attempt to drum up some extra buzz, director Andy Muschietti has even resorted to dropping major spoilers, with one earth-shattering cameo being causally revealed by the filmmaker long before audiences had the chance to see the movie for themselves, and all of those advance screenings have only exacerbated the problem.
However, despite so many details about the ins and outs of The Flash being so readily available to anyone with an internet connection, Warner Bros. apparently has at least one more major surprise up its sleeve. According to Variety, the lack of promotion ahead of opening day – which includes a solitary premiere with the cast and crew, has “little to do with Miller and was made to keep the ‘secret ending’ under wraps.”
The closer in question hasn’t been featured in any of the early access showings so far, and while speculation will no doubt run rampant, the smart money would be on it having something to do with the future of the DCU once The Flash resets the timeline.
