One of the most intriguing aspects of sitting down to enjoy a film —- whether that be comfortably at home or enthusiastically in cinemas — is being rewarded with the golden opportunity to carefully dissect a variety of Easter eggs which are typically scattered like breadcrumbs throughout a movie. This is essentially the case for The Flash — DC’s latest superhero extravaganza, which sneakily features an eye-catching horror Easter egg that fans might have missed.
While chatting exclusively with Digital Spy, director Andy Muschietti discussed the aforementioned Easter egg, which was included in such an elegantly sly way. In fact, Muschietti indicated that there are several references and Easter eggs in the film — one of which is from Looney Tunes, while another is a reference to 1984’s black comedy horror Gremlins. Muschietti noted that Albert (Rudy Mancuso) is seen in one scene wearing a Gremlins t-shirt which cheekily reads: “do not feed after noon.”
Despite being implemented in such a sneaky way, it hardly comes as a major surprise that Muschietti, who directed both 2017’s It and 2019’s It Chapter Two, would find a way to toss in an impressive horror reference. Not only that but the 49-year-old filmmaker is also set to helm Netflix’s The Howling remake — indicating his horror roots are still very much there.
As for The Flash, Muschietti recently stated that he noticed tremendous similarities between horror movies and comic book projects — hence the Gremlins Easter egg. In that same vein, the director has insisted that the superhero flick will feature “no more surprises.”
