M.R. Carey horror novel The Girl With All the Gifts is bound for the big screen later this year, and a moody new poster has surfaced online introducing Paddy Considine, Gemma Arterton and their small band of survivors.

Set during the throes of a zombie apocalypse, Carey’s source material draws on a lot of the genre’s key tropes – a deadly pandemic, warring factions and a single human held up as a Messiah figure – and it is Colm McCarthy that will be steering the girl and her multitude of gifts onto the big screen before the year’s end.

After establishing a presence on TV via work on Sherlock, Doctor Who and even Peaky Binders, The Girl With All the Gifts heralds McCarthy’s directorial debut, adapting a script penned by Mike Carey. Looking further field, McCarthy is also set to circle back to the small screen for Krypton, the long-gestating and indeed live-action Superman prequel series hatched by David S. Goyer.

Our greatest threat is, paradoxically, our only hope. Look for The Girl With All the Gifts to premiere for those in the UK on September 23. Still no word on when Colm McCarthy’s directorial debut will hop across the pond, but we’ll keep you posted as more information comes to light.

The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects. At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease these second- generation “hungries” are able to think and feel making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.
