‘The Kang Dynasty’ writer being more excited by the stars than the characters is bad news for Multiverse Saga skeptics

Story first, star power second.

It goes without saying that the cast for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is going to be stacked to the heavens, even if we don’t know the exact identity of who’ll be playing on the heroic side of the team against Jonathan Majors, Jonathan Majors, Jonathan Majors, and many more iterations of Jonathan Majors on the villainous roster.

However, the prospect of Jeff Loveness penning the screenplay has already created a lurching sense of dread among Multiverse Saga naysayers, of which there are an increasing number. It’s really beginning to feel as if the shine is finally starting to come off the MCU, and if the person writing the script doesn’t seem to want to pay much attention to the roasting being given to his work on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, then there are many reasons to be concerned.

The franchise is facing an uphill battle to win over the doubters, then, and that’s without rectifying a box office decline that’s seen all seven of the MCU’s steepest week-to-week drops occur since the end of the Infinity Saga. With that in mind, a combination of Loveness admitting that he’s falling behind on The Kang Dynasty while also admitting in a recent interview that he’s “excited for the actors more than even the characters right now” could be construed as worrisome.

Story should always come first, even at the expense of star power, and if the Rick and Morty alum sits down thinking of the names playing the characters first and foremost at the expense of their roles in the narrative he’s trying to tell, then The Kang Dynasty could prove prone to self-indulgent unwieldiness, something that’s become a concerning MCU hallmark of late.

There would be nothing nicer than being proven wrong, but a jaded fandom has been given little indication that things are going to change in the near future.
