As New Line Cinema prepares to, ahem, conjure up The Nun‘s first trailer, today brings forth what is perhaps the perfect teaser image (see below) of Bonnie Aarons’ demonic entity, who can be seen peeking out of the shadows.

Following her small, yet memorable turn in The Conjuring 2, the Powers That Be quickly issued the green light on a spinoff movie dedicated to The Nun – ditto for The Crooked Man – before appointing Corin Hardy (The Crow) at the helm. And the rest is history.

When it comes to today’s first-look teaser, in particular, it’s a simple, yet remarkably effective photo in that it shows Valak draped in darkness. Only her gaunt, solemn face peers out of the darkness, which is every bit as unsettling as you’d expect from a horror franchise dreamed up by James Wan.

Casting-wise, we know Hardy has filled his roster with the likes of Demian Bichir as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet as Frenchie, Charlotte Hope as Sister Victoria and, finally, Ingrid Bisu as Sister Oana.

For more, here’s the official plot summary:

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

Said to double down on practical effects over CGI trickery, The Nun will be summoned into theaters on September 7th. And we all know how well New Line’s It reboot performed in that early September corridor, though it’ll take something really special for Corin Hardy and Co. to generate the same amount of hype and nervy excitement as Pennywise. Watch this space for more.
