‘The Purge 6’ is in Universal’s hands but it appears they’re too scared to act on it

We might not have seen the last of 'The Purge' just yet.

Sound the alarms and take cover because The Purge might be continuing soon with a new installment of the 24-hour block of time when everything is legal and any semblance of the word crime ceases to exist.

From The Forever Purge to The Purge: Anarchy, the movies all have a central theme — society is crashing around us, and with each film version, there’s another fading pillar of what used to hold us together. Each movie is a peek into what it looks like when people get farther apart as they find more reasons to focus on hate instead of what could tie us together.

Speaking to The Playlist, James DeMonaco says that Universal has seen the script but that some concerns about it exist — namely, one.

“I wrote the script. Universal has seen it. There are concerns about budget, but it definitely presents a fractured America… The America I present in Purge 6 is where we are all separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways.”

He continued by saying that it would be a different version of what we’d seen before; and that he wants to bring someone special back.

“It’s written, it’s in [Universal’s] hands. I think they’re scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo’s] character. So, it’s kinda in limbo.”

It would seem, then, that DeMonaco hasn’t had much luck in making significant headway in getting the film greenlit by Universal since We Got This Covered spoke with him about The Purge 6 last month. Being in limbo certainly isn’t a fun place for fans hoping to wake up to the news of the beloved series getting its next installment. The films, while gruesome and, at times, downright terrifying, are captivating and memorable. Here’s hoping we get another one in the near (or not-so-near) future.
