The introduction of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no doubt this year’s biggest source of excitement for comic book aficionados. As part of a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony, the webslinger will now fight alongside The Avengers in the upcoming sequel Captain America: Civil War, before heading off to topline his own solo outing in 2017.

As expected, the first look at the new Spidey lit up the Internet last week, when he debuted in the latest Civil War trailer. Many were thrilled to see him in action – and his new suit – and others were less ecstatic about seeing him before the movie opens. But, according to a recent Forbes interview with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, that was always the plan:

“We always intended to (reveal him that way),” says Joe Russo. “He was my favorite character growing up, I still have my collection of comics in my closet so it was a dream come true for us to be able to have Spidey in the movie and interpret him as a character, so we couldn’t be more excited and we wanted to share that with everybody else… We thought it was a great way to reveal him. I think people are going to be happy with him in the movie, he’s got a very interesting role in it.”

Anthony goes on to discuss the details of Spidey’s role:

“I’ll say this, part of the fun of Spider-Man is that this film is basically a war amongst the Avengers and Spidey does not have the baggage that all these other characters have. He enters the story after the conflict that is happening between the Avengers and that gives him a very unique place in the story.”

Many rumors have suggested that Spider-Man is spied by Tony Stark, and then enlisted into his team for the superhero battle. Along with a fancy new suit, which is provided by Iron Man. It’ll be definitely interesting then to see how he slots in alongside the rest of the gang, and what that “unique place” is that the Russos are referring to.

Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman, Captain America: Civil War is set to be released on May 6th, 2016.
