Doomsday preparation experts are real, as they think it’s only a matter of time before Earth meets an unfortunate demise. These people actually have bunkers built, and Goodman’s character is one such person. When Clover attacks, he freaks out (while also saying “I told you so!”), and retreats to his shelter until the “invasion” is over. But, without any way of telling what’s going on, is convinced that only death awaits above – even though he has no way of telling.

Let’s assume the shaking in the trailer are some of the bombing runs and what not, and maybe after that, silence kicks in for days on end. Who’s to say the threat is still out there? No one, but Goodman, being the ever-paranoid (and validated) doomsdayer, refuses to go back outside and only believes the worst.

This would start to instill doubt in Winstead’s character, giving her the motivation to escape. Sure, when you think there’s a gigantic monster above ground, it’s easy to accept safety. But what if, as the days go on, you begin to question if there’s even a threat outside, as the man who “saved” you happens to be a lunatic who built a shelter just in case zombies attacked someday? Thus begins their back and forth, as Winstead believes Goodman is just another loon and she makes an attempt to escape.

Maybe Goodman is right, and Clover still roams free, or maybe he’s the same conspiracy theorist we’ve seen a billion times over, holding a young girl and man below ground for no reason. CUE INSANITY!
