Coming off his endgame contribution to Justice League, two-time Avengers director Joss Whedon has labeled Thor: Ragnarok a modern masterpiece.

Joss Whedon may not be as closely affiliated with the MCU as he once was, but the filmmaker clearly still has a soft spot for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Following The Avengers and its somewhat underwhelming sequel, Age of Ultron, Whedon parted ways with Marvel Studios, during which time he toiled away on an untitled WWII horror pic. Of course, Joss Whedon was still actively involved in a handful of superhero projects (see: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) post-MCU, and later signed on to spearhead a Batgirl spinoff for the DC Extended Universe. But Whedon’s first foray into the Warner Bros. franchise would come much sooner.

Cast your mind back to May of 2017, when Zack Snyder announced plans to step down from Justice League in light of a personal tragedy, and you’ll no doubt remember the moment when Whedon answered the call, before later ordering a series of reshoots to lighten the film’s tone. The final product is already garnering strong reviews in the build-up to release, but there’s another superhero tentpole that recently caught Joss Whedon’s eye: Thor: Ragnarok.

Per Twitter, the two-time Avengers director gushed over Ragnarok, and even went so far as to say that Taika Waititi’s film is a “modern masterpiece.” High praise indeed, and Whedon now joins a long list of people (James Gunn included!) who have voiced their approval of what is surely Waititi’s crowning achievement. Just imagine if he was given the keys to a Black Widow solo movie.

Here’s that glowing review from Joss Whedon:

Already screening in the UK and other territories across the globe, Thor: Ragnarok will open Stateside on November 3rd. And if you’re curious, here’s a list of cameos you may have missed, though fair warning: our analysis is riddled with spoilers.
