Ladies and gentlemen, you’d be best reserving your tickets for the so-called “fight of the century.”
Thor: Ragnarok and soon-to-be Infinity War star Mark Ruffalo took to Instagram earlier today to stoke excitement for the God of Thunder vs. the Incredible Hulk. Pitched as Sakaar’s main event in the eyes of Jeff Goldblum’s wonderfully eccentric Grandmaster, that titanic clash has been lighting up social media feeds ever since Marvel debuted the first-look teaser for Ragnarok, one in which Chris Hemsworth’s Norse god screamed that by-now famous line: “We know each other, he’s a friend from work!” And the rest is history.
Recent promos have revealed Thor and Hulk fighting out of the same corner – flanked by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), no less – so like all good screen duos, Marvel’s spacefaring pair will engage in some fisticuffs before they wage war against Hela (Cate Blanchett). Besides, both Phase One Avengers still have a few scores to settle coming out of Joss Whedon’s 2012 ensemble flick.
Per Instagram, Ruffalo’s behind-the-scenes shot came bearing the caption: “Wait what? Who smashed who? The fight of the century is coming.”
Additional hashtags included a reference to Hulk and Thor comparing themselves to ‘raging fire’ and ‘smoldering fire’, respectively, which is a fine example of the comedic interplay between the two Marvel heroes. Indeed, according to writer-director Taika Waititi, much of Thor: Ragnarok‘s dialogue was improvised in order to foster a sense of chemistry between its leading characters. And if that really was the case on set, subsequent trailers have all but confirmed that that trick worked like a charm.
Thor: Ragnarok delivers the “fight of the century” and much, much more on November 3rd. Meanwhile, Infinity War will see a release on May 4th of 2018.
