After working together on the upcoming sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow, Doug Liman and Tom Cruise are teaming up again to make a comedy for Warner Bros. titled El Presidente, according to THR. The film would have its leading man playing a Secret Service agent whose job it is to look after a disgraced ex-President. Sounds pretty bland, but here’s the kicker. Cruise apparently will not do the film unless his A Few Good Men co-star Jack Nicholson signs on to play the President.
Though the retired actor hasn’t agreed to do it just yet, he is reading the script and Cruise is making a “last-ditch effort” to convince him to take the role. Nicholson hasn’t appeared on screen since 2010’s horrid How Do You Know, so it will be interesting to see if Cruise can bring him out of his retirement.
As you may or may not know, this project has actually been in the works for a while. Cruise has always been hovering it but last we heard, Robert Downey Jr. was being eyed for the role of the President and Jay Roach was circling the director’s seat. Things have obviously changed since then and now Cruise and Liman are on board and they are hoping that Nicholson agrees to do it.
While I do love Jack Nicholson, and the prospect of him and Cruise being on screen together again does excite me, I can’t say I’m exactly thrilled about El Presidente. It seems like a pretty generic buddy movie and I don’t see anything too special about it. Then again, with Nicholson and Cruise in the lead roles, it could turn out to be a lot of fun. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if the legendary actor signs on.
Tell us, does El Presidente sound exciting to you? Would you like to see Cruise and Nicholson working together again?
