Tom Hanks has been a frequent collaborator of Ron Howard’s over the years. Interestingly, though, he was unable to land a cameo role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Apparently, the iconic actor wanted to show up as a Stormtrooper, yet it didn’t quite pan out.
In a recent interview Howard did for JOE.ie, he explained the following:
“Tom Hanks was interested in being a Stormtrooper. It would’ve been great. He was shooting and just couldn’t get there. But now that Lucasfilm knows that Hanks is interested, I’m sure they’ll work it out someday.”
If Hanks were to play a Stormtrooper, it would be a continuation of established A-listers having surprise cameos in Star Wars movies. Daniel Craig managed to grab a cameo as a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens, while Tom Hardy played one in The Last Jedi, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, even though their cameos were cut from the final product.
Thankfully, all hope is not lost for Hanks. He could make an appearance in Episode IX, which is currently on the horizon, or maybe in the planned Obi-Wan and Boba Fett movies that are now being developed. The opportunities to appear in a Star Wars picture are beginning to become endless, really.
The possibility of Howard returning to make another film in the franchise, meanwhile, remains rather uncertain. We likely won’t be able to see the dynamic duo re-team in that galaxy far, far away, but for what it’s worth, the director has Willow 2 in the pipeline and Hanks will reprise the role of Woody in Toy Story 4. So, there’s still much to look forward to from both.
