Tom Holland Promises Sony’s Spider-Man 3 Will Be Different And Special

It is officially official: Spider-Man is out of the MCU. Three years after he swiped Cap's shield in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Far From Home will end up marking the wall-crawler's last adventure under Marvel. Well, at least for now. The good news, though, is that Tom Holland has confirmed he's 100% coming back for further films with Sony. And he promises that Spider-Man 3 is going to be something very special.

Just a day after he appeared at D23, the star attended Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia and touched on his future as the friendly neighborhood hero. Holland assured the audience, to rapturous applause, that he’s definitely returning and that he’s already discussed the threequel with Sony execs.

“It’s not the end of me playing Spider-Man. There’s definitely more to come. We sat down with some of our creatives. We pitched Spider-Man 3, which is going to be something very special, it’s going to be something very different.”

Holland then went on to briefly reflect on his experience as the character so far, as well as again teasing that there are fun times ahead.

“I’m just so grateful that Marvel changed my life and allowed my dreams to come true and Sony allowing me to continue living my dream. It’s a crazy week and it’s never been done before so we’ll see how it goes and it’ll be as amazing and as fun.”

It’s not yet known exactly how Sony will continue Peter’s adventures outside of the MCU, but they could take a low-key approach of simply continuing his arc from FFH but just cut out all the tie-in stuff. Alternatively, they could do a soft reboot and start his story again. Or, if they wanted to go really high-concept, they could take a leaf out of Spider-Verse‘s book and have Peter flung into another dimension where he meets Venom

Holland’s certainly promising some big things, but the safest route to appease the fans would be to follow up on Far From Home‘s nail-biting cliffhanger in some way. Sony will no doubt want to put their own stamp on the franchise again, though, so it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see how Spider-Man 3 develops.
